BRONZING

Q: Help! My beautiful new boxwoods are turning orange. What's the problem and how can I correct the issue and keep them from turning orange again?

A: Boxwood presenting with orange or bronzed leaves are likely experiencing sunburn. You'll see this especially in shrubs that are exposed to full sun throughout the day during winter months, when water uptake is reduced. Certain cultivars may be particularly susceptible to sunburn (e.g. Winter Gem, NewGen Freedom). The good news is that once warmer temperatures arrive, bronzed leaves will typically return to green and new growth will be green. To help prevent sunburn, an application of anti-transpirant during fall/winter may be helpful; it works by reducing moisture loss through the foliage during periods of reduced water uptake. An additional fertilizer application during the growing season can also help prevent bronze cast in winter. We're happy to identify your cultivar(s) and present a plan to mitigate bronzing and other issues.
